Assess and Express Research Impact
A research profile, typically hosted on an online platform, provides a comprehensive overview of a researcher’s activities and allows for better management and promotion their research. Impact is measured using a variety of indicators, including citations, collaborations, and knowledge translation activities. Understanding how to assess and express your research impact supports grant applications, career advancement, and strategic analysis of research and collaboration opportunities.
The Tri-Agencies have signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), committing to responsible research assessment practices when evaluating grant applications. This commitment includes a shift away from narrow journal and institution-based indicators of impact, in favour of a more holistic approach that considers a wide range of research outputs and activities.
Research Impact at McMaster helps researchers understand the impact of their work and identify opportunities for extending their reach. Drawing on a variety of tools and methodologies, they support the discovery, analysis, and management of bibliometric data to help you better tell the story of your research impact.

Manage Your Research Profile
A research profile, typically hosted on an online platform, provides a comprehensive overview of a researcher’s research activities and allows researchers to better manage and promote their research.
Upon hiring, a McMaster Experts profile is created for all McMaster faculty. As McMaster’s researcher discovery gateway, Experts aims to facilitate collaboration among academic researchers and spark increased engagement with other communities in academia, industry, and the media, locally, nationally, and internationally. Faculty members (or their approved delegates) are encouraged to keep their Experts profile up to date to ensure their research impact is accurately captured.
Non-faculty members at McMaster can request an account by contacting the McMaster Experts email.
Consult the McMaster Experts User Guide for additional information and to help with strategies for automating profile curation.

Register for ORCiD
Maintaining a comprehensive and up to date list of research activities is essential to managing your research profile and assessing your research impact.
An ORCiD (Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier) is a unique identifier used to claim and link your various research activities (publications, presentations, datasets, grants, etc.) and distinguish your work from the work of similarly named authors.
All researchers are encouraged to register for an ORCiD and explore the Getting Started with ORCiD Guide.
ORCiD can also be connected with McMaster Experts to automatically update your profile.
Contact Research Impact at McMaster for questions and support when setting up your ORCiD.
