Bring Research from Previous Institutions
If you are bringing research data to McMaster, you can use the Research Data Storage Finder to find storage options with suitable security and privacy features, storage space, collaborative capability, cost, and more. The McMaster Industry Liaison Office can assist establishing and negotiating the appropriate legal instruments, such as Data Sharing/Transfer Agreements, confidentiality agreements, licensing agreements, and Collaborative Research Agreements.
Researchers in the Faculty of Health Sciences should contact Health Research Services for data sharing agreements.
When transferring data, sharing intellectual property, or migrating hardware, software, or any other research materials, it is important to assess legal, ethical, and ownership considerations. Appropriate considerations may vary across regions and regional or institutional relationships. When possible, consult with McMaster support personnel to help navigate this transition.
McMaster Ethics Boards
If you are bringing data from human participants, you should work with your original ethics board to guide this transition, and you will need to consult the ethics boards at McMaster before moving that data onto McMaster systems. Even if such data is being held with an external co-investigator, there may still be additional ethics requirements.
Contact Research Data Management (RDM) services for additional guidance on data deposit, data storage, and data transfer. RDM services can also help if you have deposited data in an institutional repository or other data repository and would like to bring those into McMaster Dataverse, our institutional data repository.

Faculty Research Support
Faculties offer different services to support research. To see what services are available, connect with your Faculty’s IT support unit or Faculty research support.
Researchers seeking to move large amounts of data (>TB) should contact your Faculty IT support for assistance transferring data securely over the internet.
Faculty who intend to bring hardware, software, or research infrastructure design to McMaster, should consult with their Faculty IT support unit to ensure that their plans are suitable within McMaster’s unique digital research support landscape. Staff and students who intend to bring hardware, software, or research infrastructure design should consult with their PIs and supervisors.
If specialized support is needed that exceeds Faculty IT capacity, Research and High-Performance Computing Support (RHPCS) can assist (contingent upon capacity).
