Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

Managing SoTL Data

Research Data Management is caring for data through the research lifecycle: planning to archiving. Teaching and Learning data come in many formats: statistics, literature reviews, survey results, interviews, and more. RDM Services offers consultations, training, and support for McMaster Researchers.

Data Management Planning

Building a data management plan (DMP) is not just an emerging grant requirement, it’s also a great starting place to approach onboarding, discussion, and documentation as a team. A first draft can also be a collaborative exercise with Research Coordinators and Assistants. DMP Assistant is a free tool available for McMaster researchers. Send to RDM Services for review!

If it’s your first time drafting a plan, it can sometimes be hard to know where to start or what to include. McMaster’s DMP Database has a list of over 400 examples across disciplines, as well as a selection of DMPs hand-picked for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning researchers.

Data Storage

Where should you store research data? McMaster’s Research Data Storage Finder has university-approved options. Select by risk level, storage space required, collaboration, and more. This also describes the security and backup features which can help with ethics applications and revisions with MREB.

Open Research and Data Deposit

Depositing your data in a trusted data repository is a great way to archive datasets, support data reuse, reduce impact on research participants, and promote research integrity. If you’re asked to share data by a journal or are interested in data deposit, McMaster Dataverse is a free service available to researchers with curatorial support. Let us take care of your data long-term so you don’t have to!

Secure Sensitive Data

Research Data Management Services supports the ethical care of sensitive data. With resources and training on risk evaluation, template data management consent language, encryption, data de-identification and more, we help support researchers in ethically managing data from Human Participants.
