How Do I Find Books?

Interlibrary Loans

If you have checked the library catalogue, and confirmed that we do not already have access to the material you require, your next step is to place a request using the Omni Blank Request Form. If your requested item is not available from an Omni partner, Interlibrary Loan staff will continue to search for another library in Canada or Internationally to supply the item.

  • Interlibrary Loans (ILL) is eligible to current McMaster students, faculty, and staff.
  • Loan periods for Interlibrary Loans are determined by the supplying library. Typical loan periods are 6 weeks without renewal.
  • McMaster University Library will cover all costs of obtaining ILL material.
  • All material is subject to recall.

Borrowing In-Person

Reciprocal Borrowing Agreements allow McMaster students, faculty, and staff to borrow in-person from other university libraries in Canada with some exceptions in Ontario.

Graduate students and faculty wishing to directly borrow from the University of Toronto must now purchase an annual access card. The cost of each card is $300/year. As of January 1 2018, McMaster Library will subsidize the cost of these cards, for graduate students only, paying $250 of the $300. To acquire or renew an external borrower card at UTL for the coming year, please complete the application form and bring to Mills Library.
