We wish to take an insufficient amount of time to acknowledge the profound loss of land, resources and people the Mississauga and Haudenosaunee people had due to our ancestors' desire to live on this land.
The colonists broke the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement. This agreement was entered by the Haudenosaunee and Mississauga with the intent to share peacefully, to take only what they need from the land, leave some for others and to keep it clean.
While we hope we are making progress towards reconciliation, we are a long way from fulfilling our end of this treaty. Too many people starve when others live in excess, and our environment suffers profoundly.
The Dish With One Spoon Wampum is an old treaty that continues to have many applications for today if we listen.
The Library Accessibility Services (LAS) team—Nancy Waite, Coordinator, and Zuhaa Ali, Library Assistant—supports students referred by Student Accessibility Services in accessing alternate format course materials, library resources, and research content. We also assist instructors with captioning supplemental classroom videos and provide braille services for campus partners. In addition to supporting students, we work with staff and faculty with disabilities to ensure they have access to the materials and resources they need.
We also manage the Campus Accessible Tech Space (CATS), a silent study area with an assistive technology lending library.
