Searching the Library Catalogue

By title or series

  • Search for title keyword(s) or phrases in Title, for example:
    • double happiness
    • maltese falcon
    • manufacturing consent

in Keyword, for example:

  • japanese classic collection
  • manual therapy video-series

for example:

  • "hotel rwanda"
  • "inpatient assessment"

By director, producer, actor or production company

  • Search for names of actors, directors or producers in Author, for example:
    • atom egoyan
    • norman mclaren
    • irshad manji

You can also search for production companies in Author, for example:

  • national film board of canada
  • videographe
  • columbia tristar

By genre, technique or form

genre, technique or form, in Subject or Keyword, for example:

  • adventure films
  • animated films
  • children's films

By topic

  • search for topic keyword(s) or phrases along with the keyword videorecording in Keyword, for example:
    • physical examination videorecording

  • alternatively, search for your topic first, then limit your results to videos or DVDs

For videos & DVDs with closed captioning or subtitles

  • use closed captioned in words Keyword as part of your search, for example:

  • Click on a title from the results list to see more details

  • Note:

    • the Location e.g. Mills Reserve (1st floor), HEALTH Multimedia - Videocassette, etc.
    • the Call number e.g. PR 2807 .A23 1980, TV 2538 *W85, etc.
    • and the Status e.g. Checked in, Checked out, etc.

Locating

Health Sciences Library

  • All physical DVDs and videos are located in the Reserve/Multimedia Room; online videos are linked from the library catalogue

  • Videos are grouped by broad subject, and within subjects are shelved numerically. For example, nursing videos are under WY, e.g. TV 2967 *WY 150

Mills Memorial Library

  • All DVDs and videos are held at the Library Services Desk (1st floor)

Viewing

Health Sciences Library

  • The Reserve/Multimedia Room has TV/VCR/DVD players

  • Headphones are available at the stations

  • Equipment is primarily for McMaster students, faculty, staff and researchers, but members of the Hamilton community and visitors are welcome

  • Two rooms can be booked for viewing DVDs and videos

Mills Memorial Library

  • DVDs can be viewed on most computers in the library.

  • The Lyons New Media Centre has 1 TV with VHS/DVD player in room L416; the room must be booked using the room booking form on the Lyons home page.

  • Three viewing stations, with VHS and DVD players, are also located on the 4th floor lobby, outside the Lyons New Media Centre

  • Equipment is primarily for McMaster students, faculty, staff and researchers, but members of the Hamilton community and visitors are welcome

  • Course-related use takes priority during high-use times.

Borrowing

Health Sciences Library

  • If DVDs and videos are not on Reserve, they may be borrowed for 7 days. Loan periods for items on Reserve vary.

  • Items can be signed out by anyone with a Library card

Mills Memorial Library

  • If DVDs and videos are not on reserve for a class, they may be borrowed. Loan periods are:

    • Students – 4 hours
    • Staff – 24 hours
    • Faculty – 24 hours
  • Materials may go out overnight. There are no renewals.

  • Items can be signed out by anyone with a Library card or External Borrower Card

  • search the online catalogue by Format to find DVDs and videos

  • anyone who lives in Hamilton, goes to school in Hamilton, or works in the city is eligible for a free library card and full borrowing privileges
