Engineering Guide to Research

A guide to conducting research in engineering including finding sources such as journal articles, academic books, standards, and patents.

What are standards?

"A standard is a document that provides a set of agreed-upon rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results. Standards establish accepted practices, technical requirements, and terminologies for diverse fields" (Source: Standards Council of Canada).

"A standard is an agreed way of doing something in a consistent and repeatable way. Standards set minimum requirements in terms of safety, reliability, efficiency and trust" (Source: IEC).

Accessing Standards

The library provides digital access to standards collections from several organizations:

  • CSA (Canadian Standards Association)
  • ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers)
  • ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
  • ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)
  • IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)

Some other standards are available in print in Thode Library. Find more information in the How do I find standards? guide.

Can't find the standard you need? Try requesting it through interlibrary loan or email Katie Harding to suggest a purchase.
