To address the phenomenon often referred to as "hallucinations" by Generated AI models like ChatGPT, Assistant provides responses by consulting genuine research data from the scite database.

You can customize the settings to suit your preferences, and you also have the option to upload specific references for Assistant to utilize when answering your questions.

You can also higlight any term or phrase on any webpage, right click and "Ask scite.ai Assistant".

Capabilities and Limitations

Capabilities of Assistant:

  • helps to combat the “hallucination” phenomenon wherein some generative AI tools produce citations that are nonexistent. It searches against full-text research articles and over 1.2 billion citation statements in scite.ai.

  • allows users to specify a response length for their query: short (100 – 200 words), medium (200 – 500 words), or long (500+ words).
  • can answer questions about a specific paper when the DOI (digital object identifier) is included in the search query.
  • provides users with the ability to enter a quote or use natural language in a search query to identify a specific source. This feature can be used to help verify information or fact check claims made on social media and elsewhere.

Limitations of Assistant:

  • may be limited in its ability to capture nuanced meanings, such as linguistic and cultural variations.
  • may cite a real reference in a way that does not reflect what the reference says.
  • tends to rely on a particular article in its response to a query, which could limit the scope of highlighted literature.
  • may provide inconsistent results to a query which raises concerns around reproducibility.
