Continuing Education Instructor Toolkit

As an instructor for the Continuing Education Department, you will be using McMaster University’s Learning Management System (LMS) called Avenue to Learn (otherwise known as Brightspace LMS in D2L).

You will primarily use this tool for administration and course delivery. Avenue to Learn allows you to:

• organize course materials,
• facilitate learning activities,
• evaluate learning using tools such as quizzes, discussions, and assignments,
• communicate with your students as a group or individually, and
• build a community of learning that extends outside the classroom.

How to Access Your Course in Avenue to Learn

1. When you receive your MacID, log into Avenue to Learn.
2. Once you have access to your course, you will be able to see the Instructor Guides that provide step-by-step instructions on how to complete various tasks, such as:

• before your course begins (e.g., updating dates in Avenue to Learn tools, fixing broken links, setting up live sessions, etc.)
• during your course (e.g., grading and entering grades, posting announcements, viewing class progress, etc.)
• after your course ends (e.g., final grade submission)

How to Get Training on Avenue to Learn

Outside McMaster University, you may find tutorials online by the name of Brightspace or D2L.

If you do not have a MacID yet:

  Please check with your community public library as you may have free access to these courses with your library card and may be able to take these courses while you wait for your MacID.

If you have a MacID:

1. Go to McMaster-LinkedIn Learning
2. Select Log in to LinkedIn Learning
3. Log in using your MacID username and password
4. After accepting the Privacy Notice, you will be asked to create your own account if you do not have one already.
