Material not held in the collections of McMaster University Libraries that is needed for study or research by faculty, students, and staff may be requested at no charge through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) via the RACER service. Requesting Books

• You may request books we do not own or those labelled "Missing" in the Catalogue.
• The normal loan period is 3 weeks. You are responsible for returning books on or before the due date. 
• Overdue charges from lending libraries and replacement charges for items lost are the responsibility of the patron.

Requesting Articles 

• Under the university's Fair Dealing Policy you are allowed to request 10% of a published work or a single article only from an issue of a journal. Requests for more than one article from a single issue of a journal will be rejected.
• Systematic, cumulative copying is prohibited. That means that you may not copy 10% of a publication one day, then another 10% the next day, and so on until most or all of the publication is copied.

Requesting Theses

• Registered RACER users may request theses if they are not available at McMaster.
• If a thesis is unavailable for loan, Interlibrary Loan will contact you.
• Check the Theses Canada Portal for electronic theses and dissertations.

The Graduate Study Room on the 4th floor of Mills Library is a small area designed for writing and research – complete with large tables and office chairs, a standing work area, comfortable seating, and, of course, internet access. To get to this room (L405), turn left off the elevator on the fourth floor. Walk down the ramp. The Grad Study room is to the right.

Who can use the Study Room? What can it be used for?

Any current graduate student or postdoctoral fellow can use the space for reading and other quiet research activities. If you need a quiet space to write, this is for you!

How do I gain access to the Study Room?

To access the Graduate and Postdoc Study Room space, you must fill out an application form. Upon approval you will be issued a security card that will grant access to the room.
